We are delighted to announce that we have a new strategic partner and that you can now book your school visit to The Silverstone Experience.

The doors to this amazing attraction will be open for the first time in June, giving schools the opportunity to explore a brand new, immersive exhibition. It is spread over an amazing two floors and 4000m2, visitors are immersed in the past, present and future of Silverstone and British motor sport and all of the technology surrounding it.

Covering Silverstone’s colourful history, from the home to an order of Benedictine monks, a farm, a World War II RAF training base right up to the world famous Grand Prix circuit that it is today, there are a lot of stories to tell.

The fantastic Technology Lab will also bring pupils closer to the engineering innovation and science behind motor racing with interactive and educational hands-on activities to inspire them to understand the possibilities that STEM learning can unlock for their futures. This resonates with everything that the Maths in Motion Challenge has stood for over the past 20 years.

From September, the Experience will be offering curriculum-focused workshops, that are led by one of Silverstone’s learning facilitators, in a dedicated learning studio overlooking the live circuit. The workshops are designed to extend pupils’ learning during their visit and have a particular focus on STEM subjects. These will be available for all key stages from EYFS to Key Stage 5 and will be supported by resources for you to use back at school. There are free planning visits for teacher/group organiser upon booking as shown on the attached flyer.

World Maths in Motion Day Results!

The results are in! On 14th November 2018, schools from across the globe competed to enter the fastest practice lap at the Le Mans circuit during a 24hr period.

We received almost 13,000 valid entries on the day, as well as lots of messages and pictures from schools telling us how much fun they were having, and it is that part that makes it really special for us.

From all at Race HQ, well done to everyone who took part, and now, heads down and practice for the Christmas Fun Race!

SCOALA GIMNAZIALA SPECTRUM WIN FASTEST LAP OF THE MONTH – OCTOBER

We had just short of 20,000 qualifying entries for the dash around the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez last month - truly amazing! The fastest time of all was posted by Rares S., who attends Scoala Gimnaziala Spectrum in Constanta, Romania. His winning time of 1:11.025s was just 0.092s faster that his clubmate Octavian S. so, apart from being a fantastic time, it was a really close run thing! Well done Rares!

The competition circuit for November will be Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi and the December competition will be based on Silverstone Extra (the circuit being used for the Christmas Fun Race).

Some of you have been asking what the prize is for this competition. Each month we produce a 'one-off' Challenge clock that features the circuit for that month so if you win it you can honestly say that no-one else has got one of those!

We've sent out details today about the Christmas Fun Races - one for the students and one for their teachers! It may still seem a long way off but it's never too early to start preparing your cars! We have lots of great prizes so be sure to enter to be in with a chance of winning!

Students from The Glasgow Academy have beaten teams from 13 countries to win the 2018 Maths in Motion Challenge world final. Almost 100,000 students took part in the Challenge over the past year and the winners beat them all by achieving the fastest time with a virtual racing car they created using science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) skills.

To reach the final, the students needed to win a series of online races in their school, a preliminary knockout round and a semi-final. The final itself was run ‘live’ on the Cloud for the first time and involved schools in Australia, Belgium, China, Dubai, England and Scotland. Split into two categories (Junior and Senior), 27 teams competed to win the coveted ‘Overall World Champions’ title. They had just 90 minutes ahead of the race to make all of their calculations and racing decisions, including the amount of fuel required and the angles of the track bends.

After an exciting race, the team from Glasgow Academy won the Senior World Championship and Overall World Championship trophy. Four Year 5 pupils from St John’s CE Primary School in the London Borough of Barnet were crowned Junior World Champions. The overall winners, Sambhav and Finlay, who finished the race 19.62 seconds ahead after a 67-lap race around the Circuit de Paul Ricard, France said: “Maths in Motion gives us an opportunity to compete as a team where we can use and apply our skills together for the benefit of our team. It really is exciting when the cars start to race and the Final itself was heart pounding. This project is a great way to enhance our understanding and enjoyment of STEM.”

The race was broadcast live via the Maths in Motion YouTube channel to around 10,000 family members and schools worldwide. Pictures f the event can be seen in our 2018 Gallery.

Brian Richardson, Challenge Organiser, said: “The Maths in Motion Challenge shows students there are good reasons to study maths at school and that you can have fun doing it. It also shows that teamwork is an essential skill in the workplace – wherever you live in the world. The world final teams have demonstrated this today and we will continue to encourage them to use the skills they have learned when they enter the world of work. Well done to all the school teams who have taken part this year and congratulations to The Glasgow Academy and St John’s CE Primary School for being such worthy world champions."

So many of you have written to us asking what happened to the Fastest Practice Lap of the Month competition that we have rushed through a tiny update that was needed and it's back! The competition itself is simple in that the person who posts the fastest practice lap time during June, at the Red Bull Ring in Austria, will win some Challenge memorabilia for themselves.

Deira International School (DIS) forms a part of the Al-Futtaim Group and is a British Curriculum School based in Dubai Festival City. They are the first school in Dubai to take part in the Challenge and we are very pleased to welcome them into the Challenge.

The school offers an international education to more than 1,600 students who represent over 80 nationalities (as you can see from the photograph). The school values the diversity of cultures and is proud of its multi-cultural environment. DIS is a happy and exciting place to learn and work and that ties in perfectly with the ethos of the Maths in Motion Challenge.

Isabella,St Anne's C.E. (VC) Primary School, Stoke-on-Trent has won the prize for setting up the fastest practice lap at Shanghai during January with a simply fantastic time of 88.701s. A big "Well done!" Isabella and your prize is in the post!

There's a February prize for getting the fastest practice lap time at Knockhill and the circuit for March will be Gilles Villeneuve. Good luck everyone!

When Ben Morgan from Shrewsbury High School wanted some advice about the best way to set up his car, he went straight to the top. Ben wrote to one of the top race engineers for #McLaren, Tom Stallard, and was delighted when not only did he get a detailed reply with some top advice, but also a signed cap!

We're always grateful when professionals take time out of their busy schedules to help our budding mathematical engineers. Well done for taking the initiative Ben! #STEM

"The students have really engaged with the software and we now have that element of competition in the sessions which is great to see. Unfortunately for them the staff who run the sessions have won more races than the students which is causing a little discontent(!)"
